New Rochelle Waterfront
Since the place just remodeled and reopened, I thought I would give the new incarnation of the New Rochelle mainstay another shot.
The overall experience was OK at best.
Previously, the decor was cheesy, overblown and generally kitschy. It was that gaudy leftover 1980s look & feel that made it seem like you wandered into a low budget movie. The remodel has changed all that and modernized the place with a very minimal feel. No more over-the-top glasswork in the dining room; the place is simple polished wood now: an improvement.
The quality of the remaining features of the restaurant remained the same. The food is overpriced for what you receive and the actual name of the restaurant is exaggerated.
The food, which took a while to come out on a busy Saturday night, was underwhelming for the prices charged. It's decent but this restaurant purports itself to be a bar & grill and not an overpriced diner. I suppose I might feel differently if I was a fan of the 'raw bar' options, which looked plentiful and are kept on ice in plain sight. I don't care for this stuff so I didn't give it a go.
We ate outside and had a fine view of the parking lot below. Whomever came up with the name for this place obviously was creative. You can see some harbor and some boats parked in the water, but the low-tide small and lawn furniture that you sit on outside offer less than it seems they want you to expect.
Overall, this place is a dressed-up dive. It always has been and the new remodel is the same. You can get the same or better quality food basically anywhere and possibly pay less for it. However, if you want to sit in a loud, outdoor dining area that overlooks a municipal parking lot, On the Waterfront delivers.
